At the Challenge Coupe des Espoirs Karate Tournament (3-day tournament), Van Damme defeated 25 opponents before losing in the finals to fellow team-mate Angelo Spataro.

  • At the age of 16, he took up ballet, which he studied for five years while training Karate and Kick boxing.
  • It was his father motivated him to start on a Shotokan karate school.

  • Weight lifting eventually led to the Mr. Belgium bodybuilding title.
  • He opened a gym in Brussels and earned some modeling work, but he was enthralled with the idea of becoming a film star.
  • From 1976 to 1980, Jean Claude Van Damme compiled a record of 44 victories and 4 loss in tournament and non tournament semi-contact Matches.
  • Sherman Bergman is the only one who have ever knocked down Van Damme, during his 5-year full-contact career.
